ARTIST'S STATEMENT

I choose to work as an abstract artist because I love the idea of deciphering what a person is saying when they use color and texture as a language. It is such a great feeling when someone can “read” what I am expressing in my painting based on intuition and instinct. This takes all judgment away and leaves only the most basic form of communication. The subjects I choose are often nature based because I feel a strong connection with nature. I am also an observer of human interaction. I unintentionally absorb the energy from people around me; good and bad. Painting provides me with a way to expel these un-owned emotions.

When I begin a new painting, I rarely know where it is going. There is something that happens when I create. Thoughts and emotions flow from my head and heart and into my hand. Colors and textures become a new expression and the surface nourishes my soul. Once finished, I look at what I did and more often than not, I have created a visual interpretation of my thoughts. I need texture in my work to show that there are so many layers to even one thought. Using only paint, to me, would feel as if we are only beginning to scratch the surface.

My work is currently going in a direction of seeking depth. I love the idea of creating visual depth in what is traditionally a flat style of painting. I give my abstracts a light source and shadow to try to create this environment that communicates more than just pretty colors. This idea of depth in an abstract painting serves as an opportunity for the viewer to connect with my painting on a familiar level. I want people to feel as if they know where they are in my paintings and that they can go anywhere.
